Just a Grrrl

Just a Grrrl is a site dedicated to connecting women from across the music industry with each other and with the young women who wish to follow in their footsteps.

If you’re not a woman and you’re not in the industry – even if you have absolutely no intention of working in the industry – you can still join! This is a place to ask questions and a place to find answers; a place to discover your new favourite band; a place to make connections. Everyone is invited.

So why women? We’ll let the numbers do the talking…

The other issues you probably know – the way that female musicians are portrayed in the media, the lack of female acts on festival line-ups and so on and so forth.

But why music? – we hear you cry. Doesn’t feminism have bigger fish to fry?!

Yes, absolutely it does. We encourage you to join campaigns, go on marches, sign petitions to tackle the more serious global issues affecting women.

Why music? Well, popular culture is important to us. It has a habit of spilling from our radio speakers into society at large. If this website can encourage enough young women to break into music then, eventually, the gender imbalance in this industry will begin to right itself. We’re playing the long game here.

And maybe having a music industry that is 50% female wouldn’t make any difference to the music industry, to young women’s aspirations, or to the prejudices and discrimination that women face across the world. But it might.

Hold on to that possibility. It’s worth a try, isn’t it?
